Lower Austria

Lower Austria

Lower Austria is the countries largest region growing high-quality vines.
It combines the diverse potential of different winery styles with indigenous rarities as well as international grape varieties, thus creating wines beyond compare.

Three Climates, One Country

There are eight different wine growing regions to be found in lower Austria, with evocative names such as Wachau, Kamptal and Camuntum. They can be roughly divided into the following three climatic areas:

The famous ‘Weinviertel’

In 2003 the ‘Weinviertel’ hit the headlines when it decided to market its pride and joy, the piquant Grüner Veltliner, under the name of ‘Weinviertel DAC’. Since that time the term has been synonymous with a guarantee of finding the aromatic spiciness of a vibrant Veltliner within each bottle. A diverse selection of fresh white wines, fruity reds and even dessert wine specialties available from the ‘Weinviertel’ can be found under the Designation of Origin of lower Austria.

Along the Donau river

All the way along the rivers Melk and Klosterneuberg, as well as the neighboring rivers of Krems, Traisen and Kamp one can find beautiful wine villages doted across the countryside. Here it is not just the Grüner Veltliner but also the Riesling wines that are flying the flag for the region. Both varietals can also be found under the Kremstal and the Traisental DAC. The steep hills of the prehistoric rocks of Wachau slowly change to loess terraces as one nears the Austrian Kremstal valley in the east, which influence the character of the wines both in the Traisental and the Wagram regions. In Kamptal it is volcanic soil that lends its influences to the unmistakable character of the local wines. Specialties of the region include Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and even some elegant red wines -  completing the snapshot of this part of Austria.

Pannonian lower Austria

To the south of Vienna lie some of the most outstanding red wine growing regions in all of Austria, with the quality standard being set by Camuntum located in the Zweigelt region and by the Spa area of St. Laurent, who both lead by example. Specialties of the region can be found in abundance, including the wonderfully named Zierfandler and Rotgipfler of Gumpoldskirchen, and with increasing regularity Pinot Noirs and even modern Cuvées. Put simply lower Austria offers all the diversity and quality a wine lover could dream of – with breathtaking scenery to match.
